It's a matter of protection. Your woolen rugs are a perfect food source for moths and carpet beetles. It only takes one to start the destruction process. Just like termites, they will start by hiding along the back edges and ends, eating from the backside of your rug. Unfortunately the damage will be done long before you are aware of a problem.

Moth proofing has a life expectancy of three year, which conveniently coincides with normal rug cleaning cycles set forth by the Rug Cleaning Institute.
